THE ISLAND
The paradise island of Antigua is famous for spectacular beaches and coral reefs. Apart from the mountains in the south west, the rest of the island is mainly flat with wooded valleys and reminders of its sugar producing days.
There are many opportunities for diving and watersports but cricket is its favourite pastime, test matches take place at the Antigua Recreation Ground (ARG). In 2007 the West Indies host World Cup cricket including several matches to be played at the new Viv Richards stadium on the island.
Worthwhile visits
include English Harbour with the restored Geogian architecture of Nelson's Dockyard overlooked by the 18th.C defences on Shirley Heights.
From this viewpoint you can often see as far as Montserrat and Guadaloupe and on Sunday afternoons be entertained by local steel and reggae bands at the Island's biggest barbeque party.
If you are after duty-free bargains a trip to Heritage Quay is a must, as is St. John's for shopping and bartering at the open air market on Saturday mornings.
JOLLY HARBOUR
Jolly Harbour takes full advantage of the natural beauty of Antigua. Only a few minutes away from WATERSIDE is perhaps one of the finest beaches on the Island with wide white sand fringed with palm trees where you can make use of the many activities available, inlcuding windsurfing, horseriding, kayaking and jet sking or merely lay undisturbed with a good book.
Later you can enjoy refreshments at Castaways beach bar whilst watching the spectacular sunset.
